1.   Find apartments within your budget and calculate your monthly income.  Its recommended that your gross monthly income is 3 times the rental rate of the apartment rent, including pet rent , parking fee's and any other fees that are recurring to the lease per month . Consider other expenses  such as  utilities , transportation, and groceries .  Decide on a comfortable rent to - income ratio.

2.. Know your credit before you  apply .  Landlords will complete a credit check and background check  to obtain the credit worthiness of the applicant .  The higher your credit score is , the more likely you will be approved for the apartment for are applying to lease .  If you have  poor credit, or lack credit history your chances  might be be a bit more challenging for your application to be approved.   In that case the property would ask  for a higher security deposit or co-signer .

3. After you submit the lease  application and approved from the property , read the lease and sign . The property will then require the security deposit and pet deposit if there is a pet and proof of rental insurance prior to moving in .
